Handheld (Palm) Device Links

Avantgo®-Free program offering various channels including the New York Times, Walt Street Journal and many more.  Download the software and synchronize your handheld to read the front page of many papers!!

Epocrates®-Free program offering a drug reference database similar to the Physician's Drug Reference.  You don't have to be a doctor to download the program but some medical background is essential to understand the contents.  This is not a good resource for the general public. 

Handango-Source for handheld device (Palm Pilot, etc.) software (much free software here)

Healthy Palm Pilot-Health Care Resource Index.  There are 600 resources available for download.  Frequently updated.

MDTool®-contains free palm programs for physicians including calculators for various formulas,etc.  

Memoware®-Offers various documents and books for your handheld (requires a text reader such as SmartDoc or TealDoc).  Many books are free since the copyright has expired (such as Kafka's Metamorphosis)

 

 

Volunteer Physician Links

A few years ago I considered doing some international volunteer work and had difficulty locating a good source on the web.  I hope this is helpful.  This is not meant to substitute for your own thorough investigation.  

 

Doctors Without Borders-International relief organization that won the Nobel Peace Prize.  Prefer volunteers fluent in French and require at least a 6 month time commitment.  

Doctors of the World--local and international relief organization. Dr. Stadtmauer has volunteered with this organization for many years. The local project assists the neediest refugees seeking political asylum.

Health Volunteers Overseas---private, non-profit organization that focuses on training local personnel, extensive info available at their web site

International Medical Volunteers Association-A how-to guide for the prospective volunteer.  Includes much practical advice on how to prepare for a volunteer trip, advice for the student, etc. 

Mercy Ships 

Tibetan Delek Hospital-offers volunteer opportunities for physicians and medical students.  They provide "sparse" housing for physicians but medical students must find their own lodging 

Operation Smile-Private, not-for-profit volunteer medical services organization providing reconstructive surgery and related health care to
indigent children and young adults in developing countries and the United States. Operation Smile provides education and training around the world to physicians and other health care professionals to achieve long-term self-sufficiency
